PRESS RELEASE 6 April 2026 –
International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
CHILDREN’S RIGHTS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE –
THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN PEACE MUST BE PROTECTED
THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN PEACE MUST BE PROTECTED
European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E. – Academy ry honors the United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with deep respect and solemn responsibility.
On this day, we cannot simply celebrate. We must stand in solidarity with children and young people living under the shadow of war – especially in Ukraine and across regions of the Middle East.
These children are deprived of safety, stability, and the fundamental right to a peaceful childhood. Every child has the right to live in a peaceful world.
This is not an ideal. It is a fundamental human right. Children must not grow up surrounded by violence, fear, and destruction. They must not be targets of war.
They must not be forgotten.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION IS A FOUNDATION FOR LIFE AND PEACE
Physical education is not merely activity – it is a vital pillar of children’s development, well-being, and dignity. It builds health, resilience, social connection, and hope. Most importantly, it builds peace. When children are given the opportunity to move, learn, and grow together, they develop into individuals who value cooperation over conflict. Investing in physical education is investing in a more peaceful future for all humanity.
WE STRONGLY CONDEMN ATTACKS AGAINST CHILDREN AND THEIR RIGHTS E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry issues a clear and uncompromising statement: Any state or leadership that permits or carries out attacks against children – including bombings, killings, kidnappings, and systemic violence – is committing crimes against humanity. Attacks on children’s rights are acts of terror. They can never be justified. They must never be ignored.

A DIRECT ATTACK ON CHILDREN, EDUCATION, AND OUR WORK
On 16 March 2026, a Russian missile and drone attack struck the Mykolaiv region in Ukraine, severely impacting our partner school No. 26. Missile fragments landed on the school grounds, particularly on the football field, and the resulting pressure wave damaged school structures. This was not only a military strike. It was an attack on children, education, and the future. It was also the first direct attack against our organization’s European physical education work for children and youth. We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms. We demand that the leadership of the Russian Federation be held accountable under international law for these terrorist crimes.
NO PLACE FOR A STATE THAT VIOLATES CHILDREN’S RIGHTS
IN INTERNATIONAL SPORT
A nation whose actions are stained with the blood of innocent children cannot represent the values of sport. Sport stands for peace, respect, and human dignity. Therefore, E.C.Y.P.E.-Academy ry calls for:
• The exclusion of Russia from international sports competitions for a minimum of 10 years
• Full accountability for crimes committed before any discussion of reinstatement
• A unified global stance: violations of children’s rights disqualify participation in the international sporting community
EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT – A COMMITMENT TO CHILDREN
On 24 January 2026, in honor of the United Nations International Day of Education, our organization launched the European physical education initiative: EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT in Ukraine.
This initiative is built on one clear principle: Every child matters. Every child has the right to move, learn, and live in peace. Despite attacks and adversity, our work continues – stronger than ever.
A GLOBAL DEMAND: LAY DOWN THE WEAPONS – PROTECT CHILDREN On this International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we make a direct and urgent demand: The leadership of the Russian Federation must immediately
• lay down its weapons
• cease all attacks
• end all violations against children’s rights The world must not accept a reality where children are victims of war.
FINAL MESSAGE Children’s rights are not negotiable. Children’s right to live in peace is absolute. We must defend it – everywhere, always.
Happy International Day of Sport for Development and Peace – 6 April Sincerely, Timo Virtanen President European Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – E.C.Y.P.E. – Academy ry

Thank You
World Children & Youth Physical Education Academy – (C.Y.P.E.-Academy) wishes to express its deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to our only sponsor of the year 2025, who has chosen to remain anonymous.
Thanks to your generous support, our Academy was able to deliver vital humanitarian and educational aid to schools and sports clubs across Ukraine. This support included essential school supplies, learning materials, and sports equipment—items that, for many children and young people, represent their only opportunity to learn, to move, and to experience moments of normal childhood in the midst of war.
Your contribution also made it possible for us, together with our partners, to organize physical education days for Ukrainian children. These were not merely sports events. They were moments of safety, joy, healing, and hope—moments where children could laugh, play, and feel human again despite the trauma surrounding them. Without your support, none of this would have been possible.
Supporting schools and sports clubs in Ukraine is critically important. They are not just institutions or buildings; they are safe spaces for children and young people—places of recovery, growth, dignity, and hope for the future. Physical education offers strength, resilience, community, and a pathway to heal from the psychological and emotional wounds caused by war.
Your quiet yet decisive support reflects a truly compassionate heart, deep responsibility, and genuine care for the future of children and youth. Even though your name is not public, your impact lives on in every child who was given the chance to move, to learn, and to smile—even for a brief moment.
On behalf of our entire Academy and all our partners,
thank you for your trust, your humanity, and your courage to help when it matters most.
With profound respect and warm gratitude,

The meeting addressed the missile strike carried out by the Russian army in 2022, which directly targeted the stadium. The attack caused extensive damage, especially to the running track, where a crater approximately five meters deep and fifteen meters wide was formed. The strike was not only an attack on Mykolaiv's infrastructure, but also a blow to the international sports community, as the stadium had hosted international competitions before the war.
The stadium holds great importance for children's and youth sports. While it is open for use by all Ukrainian athletes, its primary users are children and youth involved in athletics and football clubs, as well as approximately 20 schools in Mykolaiv – including schools for special needs students – that organize physical education classes at the stadium.
Currently, the football pitch has been restored to a condition that allows for youth and children's tournaments to be played on the grass field. However, the surrounding athletics facilities, such as the running track and event areas, still require significant repair.
During the meeting, responsibilities were delegated and potential funding sources for the restoration project were discussed. The City of Mykolaiv has expressed preliminary readiness to contribute 50% of the project funding, provided that the remaining 50% can be secured from sponsors or international reconstruction funds.
C.Y.P.E. Academy CEO Timo Virtanen expressed his gratitude to GO FLAMO President Volodymyr Kilarskyi for organizing an excellent and productive meeting. Both parties committed to moving forward toward concrete results.
This project represents a vital step in the reconstruction of Mykolaiv and in supporting children's well-being through sport.

Was the Event Significant for Ukraine During the War?The “Everybody is Important” event held on August 21, 2025, at Mykolaiv Stadium was significant for several reasons:
- Event During Crisis: The event took place during the war, when Ukraine’s infrastructure had been damaged, and many areas were unsafe. Therefore, organizing a stadium-level sporting event was a remarkable achievement and symbolized hope and the maintenance of community spirit during a difficult time.
- Youth Well-Being: Physical activity is especially important for supporting the physical and mental well-being of young people during times of war. Such an event provided youth with not only the joy of sports but also a sense of community and the opportunity to briefly escape the harsh realities of war.
- Global Community Support: An international organization like C.Y.P.E.-Academy organizing this event in Mykolaiv demonstrated that the world was paying attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on youth. The event likely also attracted global attention and support for Ukrainian children and youth.
- Psychosocial Support: The trauma and stress that children and youth experience in wartime make such events extremely important as they provide opportunities for emotional release and improving the quality of life.
