Open Letter to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin
Honourable President Vladimir Putin, I write to you on behalf of Ukrainian families who live in the midst of war, and above all on behalf of the children whose lives have been shattered by it. The consequences of this conflict are visible in every school reduced to rubble, in every hospital struck by missiles, and in every child who has lost their sense of safety. International organisations – the United Nations, Amnesty International, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch – have documented numerous strikes against civilians. In addition, the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant concerning you in relation to the investigation of suspected war crimes. On the basis of these established facts, I present to you questions for which the world seeks answers: • How is it possible that Russia’s war in Ukraine repeatedly targets civilian areas, homes, and children? • How do you justify actions that international investigators consider potential war crimes? • How long do you intend to continue military operations whose heaviest burden is carried by civilians – including children – who suffer and die as a result? Mr President, I must also ask you this: What would you say to your own children or grandchildren if they were to ask why Ukraine is forced to endure such pain because of decisions made under your authority? Can a leader feel pride in a war that steals the future from those who have no part in the conflict? Ukraine’s Right and History – A Nation That Does Not Bow Ukraine is a nation that has survived occupations, oppression, and attempts to erase its identity for centuries. In 1991, Ukrainians chose independence peacefully, and time after time they have demonstrated their will to live as a free and democratic people. Today, Ukrainians defend their homeland with courage that is recognised and respected across the world. They defend the right to live without bomb shelters as daily necessity, without the sound of air-raid sirens, without the fear that their children will not see tomorrow. Their rights are clear and universal: the right to independence, the right to peace, and the right to a future. No army can take these rights away. An Expanded Appeal – The Courage of Civilians, the Strength of a Nation, and the Truth That Cannot Be Destroyed President Putin, this letter also reflects the resilience of Ukrainian civilians, the unity of an entire nation, and the unbroken line of truth: no leader can undo the fundamental basis of human life – the life-force born from sunlight itself. Ukrainians continue to rise each morning despite the war:
This is not a nation of aggression – it is a nation of defence, dignity, and survival. Ukraine’s right to live, to exist, and to defend its future is absolute and stronger than any missile. A Child’s Right to Life – A Right Beyond the Reach of Any Army There is one truth that no military force on Earth can erase: a child’s natural right to grow. Every child has the right to:
and every child on this planet Earth. All children are made of the same substance – the same light, the same fragile yet beautiful hope. They are children of the same Sun. The energy of the Sun creates life, grows our fields, provides warmth and light. It existed billions of years before us, and it will continue long after we are gone. Not even you, Mr President, can extinguish that light. No act of war can undo what the Sun has created: life that longs to live. For this reason, every child lost to war is not only a tragedy – it is a violation of humanity and of the natural order of the world. In Conclusion – A Question the Children of the World Await Your Answer To President Putin, only you have the power to change the direction of this war. Only you can stop the suffering. Only you can decide whether this darkness continues or whether light begins to return to Europe. Therefore I ask you once more – without evasiveness, without political embellishment: How long? How long will children die? How long will mothers lose their sons and daughters? How long must Ukrainians defend their homes against invasion? How long will you continue a war that tears apart the future? The world awaits your answer. History awaits your answer. But above all – the children await your answer, for their lives were never meant to be part of any war.
